HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE (1997) follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, starting from the age of 11 until her college years. This memory play, told out of chronological order, uses a driving lesson as a metaphor to discuss pedophilia, incest, alcoholism, and misogyny. The play explores the ideas of control and adolescence as well as the idea of forgiveness being what breaks cycles of trauma.
